Rice is Life
Rice is Life explores how the global price of rice is affecting the lives of Philippine residents.
There are 90 million Filipinos with a 12 million ton demand for rice. The eighth largest
producer of rice in the world, the Philippines is capable of producing 10 million tons of rice
for its population.
In 2008 two million tons of rice were imported to meet the Filipino demand for rice, making the country the largest importer of rice in the world. The global market price of rice has soared in the past year due to an unexpected shortage, causing the global price of rice to increase. The high priced imports have more than doubled the domestic price of rice in the Philippines. The skyrocketing price of rice is straining an already difficult situation for the 40% of Filipinos who live in poverty. Magee Clegg is traveling in the Philippines filming a documentary that explores the crisis firsthand. Rice Is Life is partially funded by a Fulbright Scholarship awarded to Magee Clegg in 2009.
